08.28.18 | Proposition 3 - Music
This could really go anywhere, but relating to the video game stuff I was talking about in proposition 2, the game has a very heavy focus on musical themes, leitmotifs, etc.
It would also slot in nicely with the established four-count convention of the art, because the current musical direction I had in mind would more or less assign one track of music to each. Every character would have a short (roughly 1 to 2 minutes) theme for both their standard and heavy-duty variants, and then both of those themes would have a more drawn-out "battle theme" extended into a longer track outright.
I have prototypical versions of the Syx character's themes done: character theme | extended "battle theme"
I don't have music for Drei established at the moment. Again, Drei and Syx kind of break the convention as they represent flip sides of the same coin, but normally each character would have four counts. Instrumentation, arrangement, etc. would tie into their character designs and overall themes as characters from a narrative standpoint, sometimes even having signature "instruments". Syx's most distinctive sounds associated with her would be string-like "synth stabs" you hear prominently in her character theme, triangle-wave instruments (such as the bassline in the battle theme) and the loud snare drum that dominates her extended theme. On the other hand, Drei uses the same synth stabs (but a softer, legato-like version), sine waves, and a machine drum kick compared to Syx's snare.
Developmentally, I already have most of the pieces in place, it's mostly a matter of actually composing them. For example, I had the very basics of Syx's theme laid out all the way back in 2015 or so, it just took me forever to get around to extrapolating it out into an extended theme. To deviate from Drei and Syx a bit and establish some more variety, a character nicknamed Luca would be another one of the eight, and I have a rough snippet of her theme worked out as well, which emphasizes electric guitars and harpsichords.
A third character is nicknamed Tempest, who I have both character theme and battle theme stuff worked out for in a conceptual sense: his character theme is a more mellow and regimented mix of strings, brass and recorders, while his extended battle theme is a less-collected, synthesized take on the instrumentation. That battle snippet dates all the way back to 2014, though, so it'd be heavily reworked, and I already have some stuff in mind for it.
Thankfully, the way the characters and workflow are laid out, it's pretty easy to establish a pipeline, it's mainly just a matter of getting to work on it.
